The Hissing Of Summer Reeds w/ Maryam
This was actually an encounter two years in the making - we’ve talked over social media about meeting, but our schedules didn’t match and then came Covid. Last weekend we finally made it happen, on what appeared to the be hottest day so far this summer ☀️🌊
We originally planned to start shooting in the afternoon, but once we arrived at the studio to start picking outfits and do the styling, it was so hot we decided to just stock up on ice cold beverages and hang out for a few hours until the temperature dropped below 30 degrees Celsius.
I decided to let Maryam pick her own outfit for this one and just let her try on whatever she wanted from my wardrobe - she ended up with this gorgeous vintage jumpsuit from Free People, which some of you already probably know is one of my absolute favorites. I decided to accessorize it with a “wood-pearl” necklace, also from Free People and a wide brim hat from San Diego Hat Company.
At 8.30 PM, when the temperature started to drop we went out to the beach for a late evening shoot - I wanted to really try to capture that late, warm summer-evening mood and decided to shoot both with flash and natural light to see what we liked the most. Since Maryam probably has the most beautiful hair I have ever seen, I also wanted to make sure her hair didn’t fade too much into the shadows from the giant sunhat or got lost in the deep contrasts you can typically get when shooting with a single flash at this time of the evening.
For some of these shots, I positioned her so that the setting sun gave her hair a very slight back - or side-light, which also emphasized her hair’s lovely natural dark brown color nuances. I think we got such a beautiful blend of colors, light and skin/hair tones in these images, and Maryam looks like a little bohemian goddess in these 💃🏻
For those interested, these were shot @ 85 & 90 mm using a Canon 5d4, Olympus Pen F and Profoto B2 with a single head.
